Message: Check inside the distributor cap for a possible missing carbon button. It's the part that completes the circuit between the coil wire and rotor.

Message: this carbon button,do you mean inside the distributer cap where the coil wire connects?
if so yes thats where i tested for voltage and it seems ok to that point.
after i put the cap on then the volts disappear.
the distributer shaft is turning so i wonder is the timing off or the pcm malfunctioning?

Message: Inside the cap under where the plug wires go in there are "carbon buttons" that the rotor hits as it turns. this puts the juice to the plugs. Are you getting spark at any of the plugs? Of course this is the old system. I have no idea what electronic ignition or fuel injection distributors do.

Message: The carbon button is the last place any voltage is present, checked 3 plugs and no spark.
These are brand new wires, plugs, rotor and cap.

Message: Verify distributor timing with respect to #1 cylinder TDC on *compression* stroke.
Other possibilities include bad or disconnected crankshaft or camshaft timing sensors.

Message: This wouldn't be the first time someone has forgotten to do this, but you did put the rotor back on didn't you?
