Subject: Stranded! not running right--fuel pump? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 99 dakota with the 3.9L V6 and about 54k miles on it. I was on my way home from being out of town yesterday (4 states away) when my motor stopped running on the freeway after abrubtly stopping for an emergency vehicle. When I turn the key I don't hear the fuel pump starting. Could the sudden stopping have engaged the inertia switch? Where do I locate the switch to check it and how? I think maybe the fuel pump might be going out. After banging around the fuel tank in hopes of freeing up the pump, the truck started and drove for almost 200 miles without a problem, but it won't start now with symptoms like earlier (rough idle, then dies and eventually does not get fuel). I am hoping I can make it home from this motel. Any suggestions Any of your thoughts are much appreciated! Please send them asap! thanks

Message: If it's like mine, it doesn't run too well when the fuel pump dies.
Lots of bucks, so If you can, do it yourself.
Your antique truck could just have corroded with age connections, so you might want to disconnect and re-connect and unplug and re-plug everything you can beforehand, just so you aren't embarrassed later.
Just did that when my 98 wouldn't react to pushing on the throttle. Bad connection on the throttle position sender. Runs fine after the high tech treatment of un and re-plugging the wire.

Message: Sounds strange, but your symptoms are like ones I had with a bad battery. It would start fine but idle really rough and die like choke wasn't working or fuel filter plugged. A new battery cured the problem. Just to rule it out check your battery connections for corrosion and clean them. Less than a full charge will cause problems with starting and computer controlled idle mix. corrosion Will also prevent a full recharge of the battery.

Message: I was thinking the same thing jerry. If the battery had any sediment in it, the sudden stop may have caused it to shift, and short out one or several of the cells. I would get your battery check out at an auto part store.
If it doesn't fit, force it. If it breaks...well...it needed to be replaced anyway.
