If it is a covered item, there only responsible for replacing the defective parts, not the intire assembly. no idea why you feel the need for total replacement. you never said.

So many problems .... So little time

Not having heard it I can't say what's wrong. I did have my own shop for over 40 years. Howling/whining is gear noise and grinding is bearings. Bearings that are bad enough can ruin gears via misalinment. All depends on how bad things have progressed. If they gave you this diagnosis as a final decission without disasembly for inspection, I would be looking for another shop. Honesty is in question. My opinion only.

When I had the differential replaced, I didn't believe, so I had an oil analysis, that came back clean. They did a good job of cleaning out the housing, as I suppose the dealer will do for you.
Upgrade to a good synthetic oil.
