I HAVE A 1998 DAKOTA THAT I'M HAVING A REAL BRAKE PROBLEM WITHY AND NOBODY CAN SEEM TO FIGURE IT OUT. MY BRAKES KEEP ENGAGING GRADUALLY AS I'M DRIVING. THE TRUCK WILL START TO SLOW DOWN AND I HAVE TO PULL OVER AND PUMP THE BRAKE PEDAL A NUMBER OF TIMES BEFORE I CAN MOVE. I'VE HAD IT TO TWO DIFFERENT DEALERS AND ONE SERVICE CENTER FIVE TIMES. THEY CHECKED EVERTHING, BUT NO SOLUTION. NOW IT'S HAPPENING EVERY OTHER DAY AT DIFFERENT SPEEDS.ANYBODY OUT THERE HAVE ANY ADVICE. I'M GOING CRAZY AND BESIDES BURNING UP MY BRAKE SYSTEM, I'M AFRAID TO DRIVE.ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

This just a guess but its the best I can do. Ive read before that if a master cylinder is over filled the condensation can build up pressure and cause your brakes to drag.

Is it the front or rear brakes? If it is the back they may be adjusted too tight. Just a thought.

I would have to agree with what Stew said about it being the rear brakes. Drum brakes are "self energizing," meaning that if one part of the shoe touches the drum, the rest of the shoe will be dragged into contact, thus increasing the amount of stopping power. Drum brakes generally require more initial line pressure to engage than disks, but because of how they operate, they require far less line pressure than disks for maximum braking.

I'm no expert, but here are my guesses: (1) bad master cylinder; (2) bad proportioning valve; (3) faulty springs or retaining clips that should be pulling the shoes away from the drums in the absence of line pressure.

Good luck!

My son's 89 Caprice has a low brake pedal problem. We installed new front pads, new master cylinder, new rear brakes and wheel cylinders. Bled the whole system twice, still his pedal is low. Stops fine though.

Hey another 99 Dak' with low mileage! COOL!!
I just passed the 20,000 mile mark with My 99 C/C.
Anyway,,regarding the brakes locking,,,its probably the guide pins on the front caliper, Id check to make sure the pins are lightly greased and also look into the possibility of the caliper pistons binding. the brakes are grabbing because they arent completely releasing the rotors. The heat that builds up causes the binding as the parts expand from the heat. If your running stock rotors you stand a good chance of warping them pretty bad.

Just my $.02 worth.
hope you get this resolved easily.

I was reading through all of this--- and saying to myself "Man, that sounds like the brake booster..." Good call Bri.

My '73 Chrysler T&C does the same thing-- I can get it to 'come back' if I pull the pedal up with my foot underneath it.

Yeah, get that looked at asap-- as you'll have premature wear of pads/rotors due to all of the excessive braking.

Yea, I'm having the same problems, but just on the left side. About once a month my dakota starts pulling to the left hard and it only gets worse when i drive but it may only do it for maybe and hour and then it stops all at once. Thanx for the info guys I'll check on the brake booster thing. Oh and freddy why make a new post when you can just use this old one...lol...if you ask me, your the idiot.

Hi guys,
Would midnightdak still be around? Did it end up being the brake booster? Also, um..what is a brake booster. Please excuse my ignorance.
I turned the front rotors on my 2k QC dak about 2 months ago and replaced the pads with Napa's. Everything was fine until a few weeks ago when the front driver side started to drag. I've done everything short of rebuilding the caliper so I'm hoping maybe it's this brake booster thing.

Thanks in advance, guys.

Ok, I figured out what the brake booster is, but does anyone have any info on the brakes dragging just on the front left. It's not the caliper or pads/rotors. Gotta be something else.

Well, If it's not your brake booster then it's your brake master cylinder. My $ is on a caliper, but if you wanted to replace the master cylinder too, your not going to hurt anything.

Oh, BTW...

The break master cylinder is the silver "pipe" with your brake fluid on top of it. It is bolted into the front of the power booster or "brake booster" as you say.
