Message: I had the same thing happen on a long trip
this summer.
the front right caliper started to drag and
burn the pads. after cooling off at a rest stop
i looked close and found an obvious problem,
the steel brake line to the right caliper is
about 1 1/2" from the right header and heats
it up starting the pads dragging witch compounds
with more heat. i made a heat shield from aluminum
sheet metal and some plasic standoff clips and
it has never happened again. the left caliper
line is far from the left header or any other
heat.
i also have had to replaced my rotors at 25k and
i got the dealer to pay for half, not bad from
what ive heard here.

Message: Hi!
I'm a little worried about your solution. According to the basic hydraulic brake skills I learned in auto mechanic school 30 years ago, the fluid is free to return to the reservoir when the pedal is released. The circuit becomes pressurized only after the pedal moves a bit and the seal on the master cylinder piston goes past the return port.
So I am worried that your pedal may not be returning fully, in which case the problem could return instead. You might want to check that the pedal return spring is OK and that there is no floor mat in the way and that sort of thing.
Of course, with today's new-fangled cars -- with ABS and what not -- anything is possible and you may have fixed your problem just fine.
On my 1998 Dakota, the previous owner had installed new brake pads and failed to get the little spring on the outboard pads into the groove. This kept the outboard pads from applying properly and the inboard pads wore out much faster. All of a sudden I had steel on steel while the outboard pads were still perfectly good! So look at that while you are at it -- that little steel "finger" should be visible thru the wheel. It belongs in the groove; not on the outboard side of the caliper bracket.
All my best.

Message: I have a similar problem as midnightdak and 02clubcab, in that one of the front calipers will begin to drag. I have had the truck into the dealer 2x for this. Once they said everything was fine, the second time they said I need new calipers. I had the calipers replaced about 18,000 miles ago by an independent mech. I feel is competent. The independent mech. feels the calipers are working fine and is willing to replace them at no cost to me, but he does not think this is causing the problem. Any more ideas?
