i have a reg cab V6 SXT 2003 with 16X8 265/75 wheel&tire stock setup. is anyone else having a handling problem where you hit a bump on a curve and the whole truck will hop or jump over or at 80mph on the freeway hitting a bump with the same reaction? this is minor but more than any other car i have driven. is this a normal handling characteristic of the dakota? consumer reports seemed to think so. could changing the shocks or wheel tire setup to something smaller help?
thank you for your help the dealer says thats just the way the truck handles??? rob

my '00 QC handled the same way. change out the junk factory shocks for something better. you'll find many different opinions on this but i installed the Monroe Reflex shocks with great results. some rather Edelbrock IAS or Ranchos.

Try taking 4-6 psi out of the tires.

Another problem with pick ups is the empty bed. There's so little weight back there that the springs don't compress. The truck tends to bounce along on the top of the leaf springs. Try putting a couple of sand bags back there.

Typical dealer response, these guys are giving you the straight story. This is worse on regular cabs, as you've noticed. It's due to the stock shocks not being well matched to the spring rate in an unloaded truck. It is mostly the rear, even if you think it feels like the whole truck is being thrown around. Airing down the rear tires, as suggested, is one way to alter the effective spring rate. For a regular cab on stock shocks, I'd stick to 32 lbs or less in the rear. I saw a huge difference going to Edelbrock IAS in the rear, and I'm back to running higher pressures.

And to think I have a set of Edelbrocks, with less than 100 miles on them, in the shed because the truck topped out and bottomed out, at the same event on the same piece of road.

Standard cab, long bed. Any idea why I had problems?

Too short a shock for your application ? Were they matched to your truck; or did you just bolt in something that seemed to fit ?
