Subject: AC Compressor problem
IP: Logged

Message:
Ok now that summers basically here I cant take not having AC anymore. I'm stationed in SC now and the humidity is killin me. I checked things out and my Compressor doesnt engage at all. I can spin it but when I engage it just the pully is spinning. Does that mean the clutch is bad or could it be a wiring problem? I checked the fuse inside the truck and tried switching some relays around in the engine compartment but no changes. I really dont want to buy a new compressor because they seem to go for a million dollars. Any ideas?

It may be a low pressure problem that is not letting the compressor clutch engage. If the system is not charged with enough refrigerant it will not run the compressor so it will not damage it from no oil being moved thru it.hook up a set of guages to your high and low and see what the pressure reads.before all this just quick check for 12 volts at the compressor plug.if none then check the pressures.if good check the pressure switch voltage.if it is within spec then your system is prolly low on refrigerant which is a common problem sometimes.look for oily A/C lines and fittings as that's a sure sign of a leak.

Adam - what year is your truck ?
On my 95 and probably at least up to 96 ,maybe more , Chryco cheaped out and just used a steel
'clamp' to support the [condensor] lines -just
before the front support wall .
The aluminum line and the steel clamp are different metals -cause electrolysis= corrosion of the aluminum line.
You may be able to see this ,looking up thru front grille ,or newer ,maybe just lifting hood.
I was able to fix mine with Good quality
COLD WELD ( like epoxy ) -just make sure it specifies that it is ok for aluminum.
Then , if available in your area -=- there is a
new environment friendly RED TECH R12A
do-it-yourself kit available , with connections
Leak proofer and refridgerant , enough to totally
recharge your system R12 or R134a..

Sorry bout that...it's a '00. I'll check my lines but I'm still concerned about the fact my clutch isn't engaging. I got a kit saturday to recharge it...maybe I'll play with it a little more on friday when I have time. Thanks for the info.
