Message: Once the gears start making noise they are scared period. only correction is replacement. If it isn't to bad yet you may deside you can live with the noise. Bad or not to bad it can go either way. Go out fairly fast or go out slowly. Either way. the noise is caused by friction between the ring and pinion and friction causes heat. The one small chance you have is if the grease is still enough to lub the gears and there ok. In that case, Your looking at a new pinion bearing. You must replace that right away or it will get lose really fast and your gears will not run true to each other and all will be lost. My opinion from experance. Do not drive it till you fix it unless you have money to burn.
So many problems .... So little time
