I recently replaced my upper ball joints on my 00 2wd dakota. I noticed that the intermediate shaft (I think that's what it is..) that runs from the lower ball joints to the Rack and pinion system has some play in it...the play seems to be isolated to inside the boot where the shaft meets the R&P sys. I think this might be the cause of the steering problem I have been having...when going around faster turns I'll hit a bump and the truck will swerve a bit into the next lane...so I know I need to get it fixed ASAP. So does anyone know what exactly is wrong/how to fix it??

Cheers,
James

sounds like inner tie rods to me. they are replaceable. here is a site that may help:
http://search.epnet.com/login.aspx?profile=autorefctr

username: lcls23
password: library

if that doesn't help i'd suggest spending 20 bucks on a Haynes repair manual.

Were you're balljoints replaced under the extended warranty? i just had that done on my '00 QC. at least if i ever need to replace them again the hard part(grinding the rivets) is done.

good luck

Hey thanks man,

Nah I wasn't aware of the warranty extension until my truck was a few thousand miles over 100k...oh well.

username/password doesn't seem to work for some reason

You think the tie rods need replacing huh...good deal...that would be much cheaper than a whole R&P 80)
