Subject: Pinging noise (cont.) IP: Logged
Message: Re: the pinging noise while accellerating...
I have a 98 4x4 v8 5.2 (about 115,000 mi.).
Pinging occurred while accellerating (it was a loud clacking/rattling noise) and then my check engine light came on, which leads me to believe it's related to my cat. (it rattles on & off lately). I've driven it since then and have not heard the noise but check eng. light still on. Also, a few days before, while in 4 wheel drive I was making a sharp turn and it seemed as though my brake was on, but it wasn't, took out of 4wd and was ok. I always put 98 to 91 ocatane gas as well, fluids are all ok and nothing seems to be loose. ??

Message: That light will come on for lots of things besides the cat - having the code read will help pinpoint the problem. What you felt in 4WD sounds like normal 4x drive train stiction. If you look straight down your throttle body with a flashlight, do you see a pool of oil ?
