Subject: question about trany IP: Logged
Message: Question: I have a 2001 dodge dakota slt 4.7v8 with a 5 speed manual trany. I'm at about 35k miles (I know I don't drive that far to work) but recently when I shift into 3rd gear, if i don't hold my stick shift in place, when I release my clutch and trottle up it will throw right into nuetral. Sometimes if I hold my stick it still won't go in, it will start to grind. Now I go into 3rd really slow or I trottle up 2nd and bypass to 4th, any suggestions on what is wrong? Do I need a trany flush?

Message: On a spur, I got a couple of things going through My head . The not going in to gear part most likely will be bad sincrows. The jumping out of gear can be 2 things. not going totally in to gear or going in but the detent ball spring broke for that gear. Without driving it sort of a tuff guess
So many problems .... So little time

Message: Synchromesh. Might as well try a flush, after having a couple transmission shops look at it. (Free, you know.)
If it is bad, you might nose around and find out if Dodge has a recall, or some way to help you. Especially if you are the first owner and can demonstrate you didn't drag-race with it.

Message: Don't waste your time with a flush; that's not going to solve this problem in a manual. Obio3 is pointing you in the right direction for this internal damage - aren't there also shift dogs for each gear that could be worn ? Not real familiar with the mopar standards; but on many standards the gears mesh constantly and there is a dog off to the side that determines which gear gets locked in - these can wear.
Lead, follow, or get out of the way
