Subject: New B.J.'s- warranty!

My 01, 4.7...., QC, 2 WD, has 98,788 miles on it. So I called my local Dodge dealer, here in Houston, and wanted to get my new ball joints for free, on the extended warranty. They had it less than a day, and replaced the control arms and upper ball joints, and also did a TSB on a wire in the steering column. I asked about alignment afterwards, and they said it only affects the toe in, and they'd set that. The writer girl said they'd align it for 59.95, I balked, so see said 49.95.

I picked up the truck, the cashier said 49.95, and had me sign my CC receipt, for 39.95. I pointed it out, and she said I owed another $10. I made a fuss, another service writer comes over, and tells her to give it to me for 39.95.

Upper BJ's, full alignment, all for 39.95- Cool!

rc 4x4,

That's what I had thought, but one of the writers said that it only affected the toe in anyway, to change the upper bj's, I'm not really sure, so I got it re-aligned anyway.

You'll need another alignment someday, so look into a lifetime alignment with somebody like Firestone, for example. Mine cost $135.00.

lifetime alignment...... yeah thats like lifetime brakes.... nothin last a lifetime... you go back and say your alignment is out they'll say something is worn out and wanna charge ya to do it again.... 135.00 for an alignment is a rip off... we do alignments at our shop for 79.95... besides TaxasTodd you said they replaced the control arms and upper balls joints... which control arms? if it was uppers then you should have got an alignment along with that anyway....

Scott,
Of course.
What I'm talking about is paying once. They long ago ceased making a profit on me. Would have if I only went annually.
After Sears, most shops behave themselves and aren't too brazen, which is why it really helps if the customer has, at least, basic automotive knowledge. I've had the service writer, who's job it is to sell service try conning me. I just give him the "Rock" stare.

They gave you inferior ball joints without grease fittings.
You'll have to replace them again.

And stay away from Firestone service centers. I work at the AGs office for consumer affairs. We have more complaints against them than you can imagine.

Scott C,

They charged DC, it was on the receipt for the control arms with the BJ's attached. I looked at it.

The only replaced the Upper BJ, by grinding the rivots and replaceing the BJ with the bolts.

I didn't look good at it yet, but I don't think there is a fitting. I'll look next time I"m in it. At 99,000 miles on the original pair, I'll settle for the same thing, for free. I actually think this is a different metalurgy than the originals.
