Message: For conversation sake, we all agree to follow the advise of Big Oil and religiously chang oil every 3,000 miles.
Had I rushed to Quickie Lube every 3,000 miles, and got the $29.00 special, last year I would have spent $609.00.
As a Courier, I drive about 200 miles a day. Including anti-freeze, oil sample test kits, ATF and oil, for Amsoil preducts, I spent $428.60.
$609.00...........$428.60.
Oh, what should I do????
AND, Amsoil got the original engine and transmission through 500,000 miles.
Pretty good deal.

Message: Quickie Lubes scare me... Have you seen some of the degenerates that work in these places? All it took was for them to forget to put the drain-bolt back in the oil pan to cure me from going there. Luckily something told me to peek under there before I cranked it up.

Message: I ran Amsoil in a Honda Civic. It clogged the filter screen and COMPLETELY shut off oil flow.
I had to have the lower bearings replaced. Never had that problem with any other oil. My mechanic said I should have stuck with Mobil 1 or a top grade oil instead of trying the gimmick stuff from Amsoil.
My advice - STAY AWAY FROM AMSOIL.
I'm considering sueing them for the damages, repairs, lost work, etc.

Why don't you and your bosses at Amsoil send me a check for the $3,400 I'm out for an engine rebuild and I'll send you the clogged screen filled amsoil gunk?
Honestly, I understand you're a puppet for Amsoil - but grow up.

Message: shabatha, how many miles and what year was your honda civic? Did you buy it used or new?
Your mechanic said the Amsoil is to blame?
New oil shouldn't clog a pickup screen, but sludge that was already present in your engine seems like the culprit.

Message: Today I paid attention and read the banner at Jiffy Lube (the Quaker State owned stores) and it offered oil changes;
Synthetic.......$59.00
Conventional....$35.00
The hate Amsoil crowd already gets their oil changed there, but it was news to me.
Also, I heard a radio ad; Mobil 1 for $4.49.

Message: I've seen places here (not quick lubes) that charge under $14.99 for convential oil (dino). I've also seen quick lube places charge $59 for synthetic oil.
I'll stick to my 5 quart M1 synthetic for $21 and pureone oil filter for $6. I do a full synthetic using a quality oil and filter for around $36.
The advertised cost for those shops is for 5 quarts of oil. I need 6.

Message: The car had 18,000 miles on.
I'm the original owner and changed the oil & filter every 3000 to 4000 miles.
Then I made the mistake of putting amsoil in it, and it clogged up the screen.
The mechanics said they'd seen this before with weird brand synthetics and additives. Since Amsoil is basically the Amway pyramid scheme of crappy oil selling, who knows where they get their product to repackage?
Called amsoil today.
Their a-holes gave me the run around about their ridiculous warranty claim application process which basically makes it IMPOSSIBLE to get a warranty claim on their crap product.
SCREW AMSOIL.
I'm out $3,400 and they're out screwing people.
Next time I'll stick to Quaker State, or Pennzoil or Mobil 1.

Message: 18k miles? That is well within the manufacturer's warranty. Honda will honor ANY mechanical failure within the warranty period with very little fuss and can be transferred. They have one of the best warranties out there (I know from experience). Sounds more like a defect from the factory because synthetic oil doesn't sludge (Mobil1, Royal Purple, Amsoil, etc) like conventional oils do. I used to work at a company that made oil pumps for Ford engines. We had our fair share of defects. Other than a defect or some other pre-existing issue, I'm not sure what would of clogged your screen unless you (or the previous owner) ran 20w-50 or something too thick for the narrow channels to utilize. Honda makes good cars, but they are by no means perfect all the time. Good luck.

Message: shabatha,
We, I am sure, are sorry about your run of bad luck. Nobody likes it whan a machine, of any kind fails to perform at least as expected.
18,000 miles is around where my wife's Honda Prelude went from a 4-speed automatic to a 2-speed. Maybe it wanted to be like the old GM's. All the clutches were worn to the metal. Because of a missunderstanding on my part, I took it to the shop the dealer used and the dealer wouldn't cover the rebuild because they didn't deliver it.
Now I know about; www.troubleshootertom.com. Tom Martino takes names and kicks butt. He would have gotten me some kind of satisfaction.
As to your change over to Amsoil, I had a similar experience with a Volvo I bought used, that had 10,000 miles on it. I installed a new filter, Castrol and drove merrily on my way. Not too long later it just stopped. Died. Dead. Fuzo (and I don't mean the truck). Camshaft froze. No Oil.
The old tractor engine, as Volvo folks called them, had a itty-bitty oil line feeding it, and when the Castrol detergeant oil cleaned the engine, a piece of gunk plugged the line.
Did you clean your engine before you put the Amsoil in it?

Message: Anyone that converts their engine to Amsoil should conduct an engine flush first. That way, you get out any of the old crud, dirt, grime, or whatever else out of there before you put in the fresh oil. Amsoil also keeps the engine clean, so putting it in a dirty engine can cause a lot of crud to begin floating around, clogging up the filter, pump, etc.
So before you put Amsoil into that Civic, did you do an engine flush?

Message: I am preparing my engine by flushing it with auto-rx before I switch to Amsoil 5w-30. My engine has 215,000 miles on it and it runs pretty good, but I'll bet that there is sludge hidden in there somewhere. I'm going to cut open my oil filter after my first and second change.

Message: I've heard a lot of good things about Auto-RX, Relf. I think you'll like it. Only downside is that you'll have to run it for 2k miles or so (if I remember correctly with conventional oil and a new filter before changing your oil again. A bit time consuming and irritating for those of us that want results immediately. ;) Many people swear by Auto-RX though, so best of luck to you.

Message: An good engine flush that you can use is transmission oil.
What you do is drain out all your old oil and filter. Then put in three quarts of transmission oil and two quarts of 30-weight motor oil to act as your oil base, and install a new filter. Then drive the truck for one hour.
Then drain out this mixture of oil, then put in your new motor oil and another filter. It sounds scary, I know, but transmission oil works as a detergent inside the engine, but just for an hour. I've never done it; just heard about it from one of my co-workers.
