I am going to order a 2002 Graphite Dakota Quad Plus, in either SLT or Sport, and need help with the Axle Ratio option. Can anyone enlighten me as to the pros and cons of either the 3.55 or 3.92 axle ratio? I will be getting the 4.7 engine, automatic, and every option listed except for the sliding window and engine block heater.

I plan on towing once or twice per year, if that much, and most of my driving will be back and forth to work, about 26 miles round trip, 75% on interstate. Occasionally I will be hauling mulch for the yard or misc from Home Depot.

By the way, the 2002 Dakota brochures are out and the prices are on the www.4adodge.com site under the "Build a Dakota" page.

Thanks in advance.

I am going out on a limb here, but I favor the 3.55. The ONLY reason I can see to get the 3.92 gears is for racing.

I have the 4.7, auto tranny and 3.55 gears...and quite frankly, it can tow more weight than the truck can safely handle. I tow a lot and know that safety becomes an issue before the ability to pull. (I regularly pull 7k+ pound trailer.)

I do a lot of 4x4ing and have been doing a lot of tree removal on my property. I use the truck to pull 60+ feet tall trees out of a ditch after they have been cut down. This is no easy task, but the Dakota in low range handles this fine.

I would say if you are going to get larger than stock tires (mine are 31x10.50x15), then the different gears are a plus. Also, if you like to live at the 1/4 mile, then they can be handy also. But if you plan on keeping your tires stock (or at least close to stock) and don't drag race, I think the 3.55 gears are best.

I just ordered my Quad Cab today!! Its also Graphite with the Sport package and all the goodies (4x2-it will still be lifted though). I opted for the 3.92 gear mainly because I'm putting 33's on after I lift it. This will basically make it like a stock 3.55 set.

Another reason to get the 3.92's NOW (even without a lift) is the fact that it will cost you about a grand to add them later. For only $35 when I ordered the gears from the dealer, thats a great investment! Then again, 3.55's work just fine for daily driving and a weekend trip towing.

Just my opinion.
