Subject: 99 5.2L Tranny problem

I've got problems on the used 99 dak I bought.
It's got a 5.2L with automatic. After I drive about 20 minutes, the transmission seems to slip.
It's fine on the highway for long drives, but it slips in 1st & 2nd & 3rd when I slow down for traffic, then it seems to 'engage' and is OK for a while. Once I get up into 3rd or 4th (OD) it's fine.
Could this just mean the bands need to be adjusted? Is this something a decent shade tree mechanic can handle?

The slipping is not real bad, the truck moves just fine, it's just loud. Then it engages and goes away.

True, if th fluid level is low it could cause slippage. If the fluid level is ok your clutches are probably shot and in need of a rebuild. Take it to an independant tranny shop like AAMCO to have it checked out. The Dodge dealer will charge an arm and a leg to fix it. My Dodge dealer wanted $800 just to remove the tranny and a total of $4600 with a rebuild. I could buy a new tranny for that.
