Subject: 99 5.2L Tranny problem IP: Logged
Message: I've got problems on the used 99 dak I bought.
It's got a 5.2L with automatic. After I drive about 20 minutes, the transmission seems to slip.
It's fine on the highway for long drives, but it slips in 1st & 2nd & 3rd when I slow down for traffic, then it seems to 'engage' and is OK for a while. Once I get up into 3rd or 4th (OD) it's fine.
Could this just mean the bands need to be adjusted? Is this something a decent shade tree mechanic can handle?
The slipping is not real bad, the truck moves just fine, it's just loud. Then it engages and goes away.

Message: check your fluid. how many miles on the truck? i have the exact same truck as you. fluid must be checked in neutral not park. i use valvoline ATF 4 fluid and change every 12,000 miles with new filter.

Message: True, if th fluid level is low it could cause slippage. If the fluid level is ok your clutches are probably shot and in need of a rebuild. Take it to an independant tranny shop like AAMCO to have it checked out. The Dodge dealer will charge an arm and a leg to fix it. My Dodge dealer wanted $800 just to remove the tranny and a total of $4600 with a rebuild. I could buy a new tranny for that.
