After reading the responses to my a.c. question & seeing what I was getting into, I decided to bring my truck into a l;ocal repair shop to have them test the a.c. system. Well, it turns out that the Schrader valve needed replacement. Total cost of the repair was a little over 300 including recharging the system. What burns me up is the fact that late last summer I brought the truck into pep boys & they told me that the compressor was shot & handed me an estimate of $840.00! I told the guy no thanx, I'll roll the windows down. But that's ok, as I will never set foot in another pep boys. Not even for a friggin quart of oil. I don't take kindly to people that blatently try to rip me off. Up yours pep boys!

300 for a Schrader valve???? wow, there is a schrader tool that replaces the piston without removing the charge. I have one in my tool box. I can't believe what some of these garages soak people for. Whats a shrader piston cost, .50 cent or so??? Unreal.

dealers make a lot of money in the back room doing warranty and other repairs. They are usually a lot more than independant repair shops. Dodge wanted $4,600 to rebuild my tranny! Aamco did it for $1.950. A dealer wanted $1,500 to replace some broken gears in my jeep's rear end. An independant drive train shop did it for $750. Unless it's warranty work, I think I'll take it to a trusted auto repair shop. There are a few of those around. You just have to look and go with your gut instincts sometimes.

The 300 included testing the system, the 2 valves, recharge & labor. At least they didn't try to rip me off for a new compressor.
