Subject: 98 dakota, 3.9 l v6 brake caliper remova IP: Logged
Message: I've got a 98 dakota, single cab, 3.9 L V6. I need to replace the brake pads but can't find the proper sized allen wrench to remove the calipers. Any ideas? It's between a 1/4 and 5/16 and a #6 metric is too small. Maybe a 9/32? The 1/4 fits in but slips when any pressure is applied. I'm having troubles finding resources about the actual size. Please let me know what it is. Thanks, Greg Thomas

Message: I need a real response. Thanks though. My Father in law has been a mechanic forever and is going to help me tomorrow. But, i thought I would get the calipers off first (at least one side) so we'd be ready to go. But, no luck. So, thought I'd come here for some helpful advice. Anyway, I'm still looking for it.

Message: My old 95 was torqx. I picked up a set of torqx sockets from harbor freight when I changed the tranny fluid and filter. One of the sizes fit my calipers.
I also have a set of craftsman (3 piece set) of torqx and allen wrenches. It has standard and metric. I've never not had a size i need for anything.
You can also get a good set from lowes. I keep my craftsman set at home and my lowes set in the tool box of my truck.

Message: It a metric allen head, I can't remember the size off hand though.
If it doesn't fit, force it. If it breaks....well, it needed to be replaced anyway!!

Message: DONE! I went to Oreilleys this morning and they looked it up, a 7mm metric allen wrench. So, I got the driver side done, went to the passenger side and ...... whoever replaced the pads previously had replaced the 7mm allen wrench bolts with standard 10mm bolts. Boy, that was fun. Thanks for all the help gentlemen. I appreciate it. Greg
