Subject: Alternator Question IP: Logged
Message: I need to replace the alternator on my 99 5.2 soon because the bearing is beginning to grind. My truck came without the towing package.
When it comes to replacement choices I can go with the standart 117 amp for non-towing or I can get the bigger 136 amp for the towing package.
What will happen, if anthing, if I were to purchase the larger alternator?
Thanks,

Message: if you have a all of the power acc.(i.e. p/l, p/w,etc..)or some kind of outrageous amp for your stereo then yes, get the 136amp. but if you don't stick with the 110amp.
i've got the stock 110amp alt and no power and still running the original battery in my '00 QC. i do have a 300watt amp for my stereo.

Message: Lot to spend when you only need a bearing. Unless you have a REAL NEED for 20 more amps. I'd buy both bearings and brushes . So SO simple to rebuild and good as new. You buy a rebuilt alternater, you can bet that's all they did to it plus some cleaning. The ones they get on trade that need more are set aside and used as parts to fix another with some other bad part. I was great friends with a major rebuilder in my area so what I said here is real. I used to give him alternaters and starters by the 55 gal barrel full and all the rebuilds I needed for my shop was free of charge.
So many problems .... So little time

Message: Some of you guys who are advising to go bigger - have you actually tried this upgrade; or do you know if the Dak's wiring is heavy enough for this ? Often vehicles are manufactured with only sufficient gauge wiring for the alternator they came with; and going to a higher output alternator could fry the wiring. I know you had to upgrade the wiring in muscle car era mopars for this upgrade. It's possible vehicles are now made differently, but I've never heard that. Often upgrades require other upgrades, such as having to go with heavier wiring for a more powerful alternator.

Message: At least it isn't as bad as the vile personal attacks...
More isn't necessarily better. It seems they just throw parts together, but it as they have been telling you, everything is engineered to work together in balance.
Be sure it'll work before you buy the non-returnable electric part.
