Subject: HELP!!!! weird sounds
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 1998 Dodge Dakota Sport w/ a 3.9L. There is a rattling when its in park or drive, seems excessively loud when going through a drive through too (very annoying) but it doesn't make this sound when it is in neutral.

There is another sound too, when i push the throttle about halfway, very lightly, there is a clicking sound, kinda sounds like a chain that rattles. When I let off the gas it doesn't make the sound but this is very noticable at speeds of about 20-35mph. Any ideas on what these sounds may be?

Thanks for any help

Sounds like it might be an exhaust system heat shield. That's where I would look first.

Second sound may be u-joints? Any vibration while driving down the road?

What about timing chain? I noticed mine going through the drive-through too, could it be that's the only time we turn our stereos down? :>

I think it is your catalytic converter...this is a common problem...take it to a muffler shop and ask them to check it. I had one of those drive me crazy till I figured it out.
Good luck,

I just went through this problem...it was my catylitic converter. If you take a stick and hit it, you may be able to hear the stuff rattle inside the cat. It is covered by a 8 year/80,000 mile warranty...take it to your dealer and they will verify it is your converter.

I would also say the converter. Mine went out at 20K in my 97 and had the same noises. At first I though my spare tire mount was loose. It was that type of rattling.

Being a 98 most likely you are still covered under the emissions waranty.

I'm on my third cat...I pretty much recognize the rattling when I hear it now. It comes from underneath you. Since I don't have much faith in the dealership, I took it to one of those 5-min free estimate places the first time - where they put it on a hoist, hit the cat with a stick and said "Yup, it's your cat, take it to the dealership, it's covered."
