Subject: 4x4 gears IP: Logged
Message: Can anyone tell me how to lubricate my 4x4 setup? I've mentioned before that I have a problem getting out of 4-wheel drive...It's "tough" to get the shifter back to 2-wheel. I figure I'll attempt to lubricate the setup, or gears, whatever.
Any advice/instruction? It's a 93 V8.

Message: Change the transfer case fluid to ATF 4 or AmsOil uni. atf. i also added a half quart of Lucas Pure Synthetic Oil Stabilizer. change front and rear differential fluids to a good synthetic 75w 90. Find every grease fitting and apply a good grease. also check to see if engine oil needs changed and transmission fluid.

Message: Here's the deal. Have the truck in gear and moving very slow. Maybe 3 mph . While pushing your lever in the direction you need it to go, step down on the gas a bit and release . step release, step release. All while pushing lever in the direction you want it to go. This is a pretty normal way to get from 4 wheel to 2 wheel drive. relieves the pressure. Oh, be going straight while doing this. If it seems still way tuff to shift, check your tires front to back for same size. This is super important. Even if there marked as same size, there can be a big differance between brands. just a small differance will lock you up. Other then a below zero shift situation I doubt changing fluids will make the differance you need to happen. By the way. hopefully your not trying to do this shifting on pavement. serious damage can come of this.

Message: I haven't ever intentionally shifted on the pavement, but there was a time when I was having such a hard time, that I started to drive home with it in 4-high...Not too long into the drive I got it to shift though, so thankfully not many corners were taken in 4-wheel. Ok, here's the stupidest question you'll ever here in your lives: How exactly do I change or add oil? I have no experience with such work, and I realize it's probably very simple. Feel free to joke about that, but in all seriousness, what do I take off and where is it.

Message: My truck is hard to shift, and my brothers is real easy. I think its because he uses his 4x4 all the time, and I'm lucky if I put it in a few times a year. From the factory, they are real tight. My best suggestion is to engage the 4x4 often. Go find a stone parking lot. Work it in and out a dozen times.

Message: If you take the bezel off(this is the molded plastic on the floor around your shifter) you should see a metal plate which you can lift up and under that there is a plastic guide. Clean the plastic guide and the metal plate with slovent and dry. Put new grease between the two and put bach together. You could try to do this from underneath your truck but will not do near as good a job. If this does not make it shift easily there is something in your transfer case.

Message: Thank you guys for your help. I don't use my 4x4 but maybe once or twice a month, so that's a good possiblity that it just needs to be worked more. I'll get under that shifter bezel and start some cleanin'!

Message: Just crawl under and look a while. Things will start to make sense as you follow the flow of things.
Check the linkage. Could be corroded and crudified, especially if you rarely use it. And live where they de-ice roads.
Drains are on the bottom and pretty obvious. Your manual (I LOVE this, can you immigine a woman reading all these posts, shaking her head and muttering, "all the dum-dum had to do is read the instructions) gives you directions, I'll bet. Don't know, I never read mine, just looked!
Parts stores have various tools to get stuff from bottle to filler hole.
