Subject: Squeeling - belt or pump?
IP: Logged

Message:
My 99 5.2L makes a squeeling noise that goes away (almost) as it warms up. The serpentine belt "looks" ok. I tried some of that spray belt dressing. That made it squeal like a stuck pig until it wore off.
My question - do you think the squeeling is just the belt, or could it need a new water pump?
I don't see any signs of leaking from the water pump or ps pump, and the steering is fine.

I take it you already checked the fluid levels in the power steering. I've had water pumps go out but they didn't make any noise, they just leaked.

By the way, never use belt dressing on a serpantine belt.
The belt is good until chunks fall off. In other words, it'll last a long time.
My personal squeeking was caused by one or more of the following;
The belt tensioner pivot wears out, throwing the pully out of alignment.
The crummy, cheap, bearing of the idler and tensioner grease dries up. I pried off the seal, used boiling water to remove the old grease, dried it with the wife's hair dryer and stuffed it full of Amsoil Racing grease.
Let us know how you do.

When I first bought my truck (99 Dakota 4x4 with the 318 - pre-owned), it had a slight squealing problem. Servicing the belt tensioner (a la Shatto) fixed it. When my water pump died, it made a sound more like a bird tweeting -- a softer sound than a squeal.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I took a quick look at the tensioner.
I only see a bolt that goes straight through the front of the pulley.
Where is bolt located for adjusting?
I could relax it, pull the belt off and lube the pulley.

there is no adjusting it. put a wrench on the bolt in the center of the tensioner pulley and turn it to the right. it is spring loaded.

Replaced the belt, squeal gone.
But $50 from O'reillys was a bit steep.

Thanks all!
