Subject: New antifreeze IP: Logged
Message: I thought this weekend would be a good time to tackle the antifreeze in my 2001 4.7 DAK. Read my repair manual and it said to remove the engine block drain plugs to drsin the fluid from the heater core, etc. So I crawled up under it (I love a vehicle you don't have to jack up to get under it). Found the plug, screwed around with different sockets, 9/16 12 pt had a little slop it so I went with a 14 mm 6 pt. Only 3/8 drive short ratchet would fit in to the small space. Long story short -- couldn't do it. Its tight as &%^$% and there's hardly any space to work in.
Any ideas??

Message: Yep, what he said. Then do the heater core hoses seperately, you don't want to back flush all the crap from the heater core into the engine.
If it doesn't fit, you're using the wrong hammer!

Message: Removing the lower radiator hose will drain about half of the block, and about the same for the heater core. The radiator petcock is actually the lowest point in the system, so opening that will drain out about as much as you're going to get. Without removing the block drains, it's really difficult to get all the fluid out. But you can flush most of it out.
Drain out what you can. get a bucket of hot water, or connect a hose to hot water outlet, and refill the system. With the radiator cap removed, get the engine warmed up at idle. If you rev the engine, you'll get wet.
Open the petcock and let the fluid drain. as it comes out the bottom, keep adding hot water to the top. Eventually, you'll get clear water out of the drain. It's tedious, but easy and it works.
Now add the correct coolant, water, and Water Wetter.
Also, the petcock has a piece of tubing connected to it. But it's very short, and doesn't actually reach anything. Not really sure why it's there. Pull that tubing off, and add another that's about a foot long. Drill a hole in the plastic splash pan to run the hose through. Now you can just open the petcock and drain into a bucket.
