I'm starting to have a problem with my 01 when I first start it in the mornings. After I start it and it idles down the first time, it waits a few seconds and idles back up and then back down again. It does this two or three times and then idles fine the rest of the day. Wondering if the TPS sensor is starting to go bad. Anyone had this same problem? Thanks. Oh yea - its the 4.7.

I had a somewhat similar problem. First thing I would do if I were you would be to clean your throttle body and Idle Air Control valve.

http://www.wjjeeps.com/service/tbody.htm

The instructions above are for a Jeep, but it is the same engine/setup. If that doesn't seem to clear things up for you, you should check your TPS or have someone check it for you. Advance Autoparts has a Sorenson TPS for our Daks that is about $30 and works pretty well if you should choose to try it. If it doesn't fix the problem, it can't hurt to have a spare.

Do you have any mods on your truck?

Thanks for the info. Only mod is Airaid intake system that has been on for a while. I forgot to mention I've noticed that when this problem started, my shift points started moving a little. So I'm leaning towards TPS.

If it is the stock TPS, it may be getting a little funky. If you have a digital multimeter, you can check it yourself. Just punch the positive end into the weather sleeving of the middle wire at the plug and put the negative end on the negative battery terminal. Turn the key on (but do not crank the engine). You may have to fish around till you hit the connnection point. Characteristically, the I've seen them range from .50vDC to .75vDC. My new one is at about .61vDC I believe.

Still, it is a good idea to clean your throttle body if it has never been done before. You'll be surprised at all the carbon buildup, and it will run a lot better as well.

Then you must not be looking at the right one. We're talking about the 4.7L engine. Not sure what the cost would be on a 3.7L, 3.9L, 5.2L, 5.9L, etc.

Advance Autoparts: GP Sorensen Throttle Position Sensor, Mfg Part number 7793692. $26.46.

And Kowalski is right, it could be the battery. Batteries do weird stuff when they get old. Best to go by an Autozone or someplace similar and get it checked (for free).

With the battery, what you are looking for is marginally low voltage, and it may be hard to test for after the truck has just been run over to where you are testing it; being charged up along the way. When the PCM doesn't see full voltage (such as when it's sat for a while with an older battery) the idle memory will be one of the first things it forgets. You might try swapping batteries with a freind to see if that helps. After losing voltage completely (when you swap), you'll have to hold the throttle open a bit (couple minutes) while the PCM relearns idle or it will stall. It could well be a TPS or IAC (idle air control) problem too.
