I have a 02 4X4, 4.7 with the tow package. I
HATE the way the tranny is computer controlled.
At 34k I no longer trust it..

Message: Dan; It sounds like you got ahold of a bad truck, or the previous owner didn't take care of it. 55,000 seems a little early for a waterpump though. The 46RE isn't the best transmission either to be truthful...
I have had 2 dakotas (a 98, and my current 00) Never had a problem out of either of them. Unless you count the ball joint recall on my 00, but I didn't pay for that.... Don't get discouraged yet, you have a quick truck (don't expect good mileage fom it :-)

Message: There is the chance that your truck is not being diagnosed properly. Many times, the problem can be fixed with just a simple little change, not necessarily a big expensive fix. I'll give you an example...
My truck's overdrive was failing on me when I get between 55-65 mph on the freeway. I took it to several shops for different opinions. They told me I needed a rebuild tranny. One shop told me I needed a new tranny valve body.
So I just got underneath the truck and tightened the wiring that goes into the overdrive. I just cinched it down as much as I could. That's all I did, and it worked. Now I have no probs with the tranny and it runs great.
Sometimes it's just a simple fix that people overlook.

Message: what i have seen on must 98-00 dakotas is, around 140,000-160,000 miles they need ball joints, water pump, and new brake rotors and brake drums.

Message: it depends on your truck. Some have no problems, and others lots. They say if your truck was built on a friday or Monday you will have a good chance of it acting up. LOL My 99'R/T only has 40,000 miles, but it has had it's share of problems. @nd week the driveshaft fell off. The AC compressor has needed to be replaced, and the intake manifold had to be replaced. The brakes seem anemic yet the dealer said they are working within specifications. Then again, I wonder on warranty work if the dealer just replaces the whole thing instead of just fixing it, such as the intake manifold. The dealers make a lot of money on warranty work. I remember when the trans went out on the used 2001 Durango I bought after only 65 miles. the dealer wanted $4,600 to repair it. Yeah, I thought I misheard that amount too. My extended warranty co. said "No deal!" So I took it to Aamco and they did it for $1950. Dealers jack up the price on everything. They wanted $800 in labor to remove the tranny for repair!! But you never know, Aamco could have taken me for a ride too. How do you know?

Message: Yeah, did you catch that? a 2000 model with 51k miles, hmmmm and its having some breakdowns?? Hmmmm again, is the rubber on the brake pedal worn out and does it have new tires?? Are the seats worn out?? I think you get it now. But again, it could be that a little old school teacher owned it before you and only drove it 3 miles to school and to church on Sunday -- could be.
Well I have a 2001 with 4.7, 76000 miles. And no breakdowns, just ball joints, and it has original tires. Trans torque converter slips ocassional when you first start it in the morning, after it runs a block, it sucks up the fluid and drives perfectly -- I'm just putting up with that for now but will get to it some day (its been doing that for 2 years, yeah, I'm tolerant).

Message: The 46RE valve body going out is relatively common, but the water pump going out at 51k is very rare. Some other common issues to keep an eye out for are ball joint replacement and intake manifold plenum gasket failure.

Message: R/T's only came with an automatic. Not a great choice on Dodge's part but still infinitely better than GM's bright idea of putiing a 305 and 7.5" rear end in the 80's Monte Carlo SS's (duh!)

If either of the 2 sets of rotors I have had on my truck on 42 thousand miles would have lasted to even 1/4th of the mileage you mentioned I would have been happy. My first set warped at 7800 miles, BADLY. Second set started acting up around 12K and I've just been living with it until I get the scratch together to pick up aftermarket stuff. I think most truck manufacturers are having problems making durable rotors nowadays. Seems like you could go to a board for any brand of truck and see a good number of posts about people needing to go to the dealership for rotors at least once in the first 12000 miles.
