Message: disconnect fuel line before fuel filter and run it into a bottle or something. Try to start your car- if bottle is empty it is your fuel pump - if it gts gas in bottle it may be your filter

Message: Good question. I don't know where it is on a Dakota. Never looked for it. I assume it is under the hood, but it may be in the line in the back underneath the vehicle by the gas tank. Just start at the tank and follow the lines I guess if you can't locate it in the engine compartment. Anyone know where the fuel filter is?

Message: Can guarentee the fuel pump/sending unit is toast. It's not pumping, and not reporting back to the gauge. Save time trying to diagnose and replace the pump.
Keep in mind, it is possible, and sometimes easier, to remove the bed than it is to drop the tank.

Message: It is way easier to check the fuel filter 1st than to replace the fuel pump. Oh heck, just replace the fuel filter - it's gonna need it sooner or later anyhow. But if fuel is being delivered it isn't the pump so why go through that hassle of removing bed or dropping tank?

Message: Before we start saying were the pump is or isn't let double check to see if this thing a a CARB or injectotors...if it has a carb, then it will be an engine mounted mechanical pump.
If it doesn't fit, you're using the wrong hammer!

Message: What 4 things are needed to make an engine start and run.??
I'll give a hint. The 4th is compression.
Answer that ?, then figure out what is missing.
Then you can intelligently troubleshoot your truck.

Message: The other 3 would be air, fuel, and spark; but even knowing that, this guy is going to be challenged trouble shooting his truck. Should have been able to figure out if the starter was involved by observing if it would crank or not...
matt - if the rought running came about gradually, it could just need a tune up. If it started suddenly, suspect a timing chain or distributor related problem. It does crank, right ?
Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Message: You might want to check the idel air control valve. If it just happened, you know running good one day and not at all the next that could be yout trouble. It's your truck, trouble shooting is done buy working out things step by step. You know how it was before this happened so use that info and go from there.

Message: If both spark and gas are not present try replacing the Auto Shutdown Relay. If you have spark but no gas try replacing the Fuel Pump Relay. Both are actually the same part and cost about $10. Also the starter relay is same relay too so you can test the relays by stickin em in the starter relay position then try to crank the truck over. If it doesn't crank with one of the relays that relay is bad. Always start with the cheap stuff... Don't go straight for the expensive fuel pump when relays and fuel filters are cheap and easy to replace.
