Subject: 98 Dak cold stall problem

Message:
I have a '98 Dakota with the 2.5 ltr. Every morning my truck will stall when it first starts up. The previous owner said he replaced alot of the sensors, etc and could never get the problem fixed. I am thinking that it may be the cold start valve or the dist cap-getting overnight moisture. If I let the truck sit- while at work- it starts ok most of the time. Prev owner said he changed the cold start valve thing and I just recently did a tuneup- new plugs, wires, cap, and rotor- to no avail. Is this some known problem? How can I fix this? I am at a loss. What else could cause this? I think it cant be the o2 sensor, since that doesnt really "kick in" till the engine is warmed-right? The truck has 70k on it and the prev owner said it has been doing this to him for awhile also. Once truck is warm, it will start with no problems. It uses no antifreeze so I am guessing that the head and gasket is good. My email is- john27pa@alltel.net- please get me there as I am not sure if I can get the messages here.

had a problem like that with my 99'. It would start okay but unless I kept the revs up with the gas pedal it would die. seemed like the auto choke wasn't working. Then one morning my battery was dead so I got a new one as the ole OEM was getting old. It solved the problem as it never had the starting and stalling problem again. I think it just wasn't getting the proper amount of voltage to the computer or something. And good thing it solved the problem so I wouldn't have to take it to the dealer so they could putz around with it and try to figure it out.
