Subject: 3.55 to 4.10 Gears & Odometer reading IP: Logged
Message: I just swapped out my 3.55 to 4.10 gears so I can tow a bit more.
I know the speedometer is not giving me the correct reading.
Is the odometer also off? or is that reading taken from another area so that it isn't off.
If it is off does anyone know a formula to calculate the correct odometer reading?
I want to calculate my mpg.
I have the formula for the correct speedometer reading as:
Actual speed = (Old gear Ration/New Gear Ratios) X speedometer reading
Thanks

Message: your speedo and odo are going to be off..... there is a programmer that you can use that will go into the computer and change the gear ratio do that the speedo and odometet will read correctly.... or you can go to your local dodge dealer and see if they can flash it for you

Message: Thats funny, changing the gears on my 01, dak, doesn't change the speedo/odo, only a tire size change will do that.

Message: TexasTodd
You know, when I'm driving on the highway with an actual reading of 65mph I'm flowing with the traffic.
The gear change formula says I'm actually traveling at 56mph!?
Maybe I don't have to change my odometer reading.
Is there a way to find out?

Message: depending on the year of your dak the speed sensor was placed so only changing your tires size will affect your speedomiter

Message: Changing gears does not affect the speedometer of 97-04 Dakotas/Durangos, only changing the tire diameter.

Message: Is it the same for a 06 dakota, as far as sensing just the tire size? Thanks, Don.
