Message: late 80's early 90's don't really have that many problems that i've run into. "TDI" is turbo direct injection - turbo diesel. these are the better version of the engines in a vw (better milage). only serious problem with the transmission is 5th gear on the manuals. if it goes you can replace it and change the fluid in about an hour. i run and have run many vw's as well as dad so if you get it and need a bit of help let me know. also if you get it i would suggest the vw mechanics repair guide at the dealer(about $100 but you could rebuild the entire car if someone gave it to you in nuts and bolts)

Message: thanks for the replys, cars still for sale and my pockets are still empty. its the GLi with the 1.8L gas motor and 5speed manual. the guy is never around but if i see him i will speak with him and see how many miles are on it and things he has had to replace. my parents don't want to add another car to insurance, but it would be one hell of a gas saver compare to my truck.
