Ok here is what is going on. My temperature gauge gets up to about 210 before it starts droping down again. Is that normal for these trucks? I have checked the fluid level it is full. My only thought is that the thermostat should be replaced. It is a 99 two weel drive 3.9 manual tranny. What do you guys think?
Thanks
Kevin

Kevin, depending on where you live, it may be normal. So, where do you live?

BTW, no matter where you live, it's a good idea to install a 180 degree t-stat.

What does where he lives have to do with anything. I live over 5000 Ft . I also drive to the coast. My temp guage funtions the same in either place as it should . 195 degrees is the same on the coast as it s at 5,000 plus ft' Now had you said boiling point you would be correct. that is differant.I also disgree wuth the 180 thermostate unless he is running a S/C , a turbo or a highly modified engine. Plus if he lives where it's cold his heater will Not blow really hot air.Unless I had one of the situations I listed here, I wouldn't even consider a 180 for a veriaty of reasons. These are my personal opinions devised from years of study/reading plus over 40 years in my own shop.

So many problems .... So little time

He says in response..............

kevin,
You might do a quick, cheap check of your radiator.
When the truck is at running temperature, feel the back of the radiator. (Might turn it off first.)

I did that because my temperature was a bit odd, and discovered that it was 2/3 to 3/4 cold.
With a new radiator the fan works again because it can heat up to function.
Temperature gauge works better too.

Remember, radiator shops just love it when we use stop-leak and plug em up.

Scojo I live in connecticut, but I don't think that that has any thing to do with it because I have two friends with the same year dak and teirs don't go above 195.
Obio3 I also agree with not using the 180 degree thermostat. I have heard that the colder your engine runs the more gas it burns. With todays gas prices I am not willing to sacrafice any amount of mpg. And my enginve is not turbo charged or highly modified in any way. Only mod is a cai.
Shatto The back of my whole radiator is hot. I have never, and would never use stop leak of any kind in any part of my vehicle.
I am picking up the new thermostat today, and I will probablly install it on Friday. I will post then to let you guys know if it fixed the problem.

Thanks for all of the help.

I changed the thermostat and flushed the whole system today. The temperature never goes above 195 now. Thanks for the advice.
