Subject: my truck is trying to kill me!! IP: Logged
Message: yet again my brakes went out on the freeway. cruising at 70mph when i heard what sounded like squirrels playing inside my door, when it hit me that my brakes my have sprung a leak, they did! i pumped the brakes so i could stop off to the side of the freeway when my dad and i started the truck and drove to get away from the freeway, when we heard binding in the front end. we had a tow truck pick us up, and drive us the rest of the 112 miles home.
the brakes aren't working, but the fluid level is on full, odd? the wheel wombles, probably because the wheel bearing is bad and the wheel bearing nut is loose. 155k and in the last 5k its been, ball-joints, water pump &thermostat, and a rack-n-pinion, now wheel bearings. just hope i can fix the next part before it fails.

Message: the problem has been identified, it was the wheel bearing. if you have around the same mileage as my truck i suggest you replace the spindle with the wheel bearings already pressed in for $100 each. if this part fails out on the road you might not live to tell the story. i had no brakes or very little because the wheel was wobbling and it spaced the brake pads to far away from the rotor causing very little brake pressure. if you can move your wheel back and forth, or the tire is angling out ward, or if you hear a squeaking coming from the front end than you have a couple warning signs. my dad and i where really really lucky because this part failed right as we got off the freeway.
thanks for the concern Shatto! i guess I'm just harder to kill!

At least I attribute wandering all over the road to my driving.

Message: Well your back brakes should have still worked fine - even your emergency brake. And the things you mentioned, wheels moving, squeaking - they can also be a sign of ball joints and bushings. I know you said your ball joints were replaced. My front end creaks badly when going over a speed bump. I don't know if it's the bushings or ball joints on my 2001 Durango. Damn, I should have gotten a Chevy. LOL

Message: lol my teacher has a 05 chevy truck and at 13k miles his ball joints are already going bad. my E brake isn't in top order, and if a pad is futher away from the rotor it will affect the whole brake system because it leaves more space in the brake line and a drop in brake pressure. i had to pump the brakes to slow the vehicle.

Message: 156k miles, i don't think this is a common failure, but your fair warned.
i pulled the hub and bearings off of the spindle and it looked like there was no grease in there to began with, could have been cooked. the lower set of bearings were square and half of the upper set were turn sideways. the spindle was blue from the heat and the spindle was skratch
I'm replacing both sides and will dismantle the other side to see how well it looks.
