Subject: Oil filter leak

Message:
Hi All,
I hope I can explain this correctly. I have a 1997 Dakota V6 2 wheel drive. I went to change the oil yesterday and the last shop that did the filter change put it on super tight. When I was taking it off I noticed the plate were the filter nipple attached turned a little with the filter. (I don't know what you call it.) I put on the new filter and tightened it. I started the truck and noticed the filter leaking from the bottom. I then tried to tighten the filter more-same thing. My question is what is that piece called? The nipple is attached to it and it can turn.
Thank you,
Bill

Are you talking about the part with the threads the filter screws on to? I guess a plumber might call it a union . Don't see how it could leak as it is inclosed within the gasket on your new filter. However, I have seen a few filter gaskets that leaked and they was all fram . Those things are garbage. I'm not so sure that (nipple?)Screws in as a stand alone part but I may well be wrong. Never had a reason to look close at one. Reguardless, I would get another filter for starters and while it was off figure out what is lose if anything and fix it. Also be sure your wiping a bit of oil on the filter gasket.

So many problems .... So little time

Hi!

Just my $0.02:

You're actually referring to the circular plate with the 4-6 holes in it, right? That is held in by the threaded nipple, right?

I think I would call it an "oil filter adapter plate"...

Maybe stop by your local DCX (Daimler-Chrysler) dealer and see what they call it...

I know for sure that there is at least a round O-shaped gasket beneath that plate; prob should replace that while you're there, too. Just to be safe.

Good luck!
