Subject: Piston Coating in my Oil?? IP: Logged
Message: Hello,
I am a Durango 4.7L owner, but have come here before to lurk for good advice. When I changed my oil today (every 3.5K miles with Mobil 1 and PureOne filter) I noticed what looked like paint flakes in the oil I drained out. (Truck has 21500 miles). I took samples to two different dealers and each said it looked like some of the anti-scuff coating from the pistons. They see this often and it is nothing to be concerned about. I can't help but be concerned about 1/2 teaspoon of "paint flakes" in my oil possibly clogging ports, etc. Appreciated any thoughts or other experiences with anything similar
TIA

Message: I got my 98 with 65,000 on it. It has that 5.2 auto and I noticed that since I changed my oil the first time that it takes a couple of seconds to get oil pressure. This concerns me deeply. This morning I heard soem noises when I started it up. I used Pennzoil with Pennzoil filter first, then Pennzoil synthetic with a Bosch filter, now I am on Mobil One with a Mobil filter. It now has 78,000 on it.
I don't see any flakes though. If I do, I will FREAK OUT!

Message: Tip: DO NOT use Pennzoil. I never understood why until we swapped out the engine in my parent's '90 Jeep Cherokee and a friend pointed out the sludge that it deposits because they use parafin wax in the oil.

Message: It is far better that the coating take the abuse instead of scuffing the skirt. I do not know how normal it is. I have nly seen this coating on HP imports and race engines. I am sure that over time it has to wear off. It is there to prevent reduce piston scuffing. I have no idea how long it should last.
