Subject: Thermostat and Swaybar question? IP: Logged
Message: I've noticed on here where many people have swapped over to a 180 degree thermostat. What are the advantages to doing this over a 195 degree thermo? I am going to be flushing out my coolant this weekend to get ready for summer and am going to go ahead and replace the thermostat being it is almost 6 years old. Not sure if a 180 degree thermo will muck things up or even if I will find any advantage in having one over a standard.
Could bad swaybar bushings be a cause for sloppy steering in turns? They aren't squeaking as best as I can tell, but then again, it is hard to tell over the highway noise. Could just be imagining it is getting sloppy. Shocks were replaced about 2k miles ago.

Message: As I have heard,180 thermostat won't make any change if it is alone. It helps only in compilation with another mods like cold air intake, exhaust, chips etc..Otherwise
you will not fell any gain.

Message: Thanks, Mikesz. I'll just stick to the standard thermostat then. In any case, I'm gonna replace it while I have it all apart. If it looks good, I'll probably hold into it for a spare (I swear, I am collecting one of everything for spares). I don't really plan on ever doing any major modding except for maybe a homebrew CAI and Superchips to go with my exhaust. Other than that, I'll probably keep it simple. Truck is running pretty good, and I don't want to jinx it. ;)

If it runs great, let it run.Several months ago ,even several weeks ago ,I was an enthusiastic of the mods.In mean time i read alot on the dakota forums. Not only the posts but many links also.Actually from the big plans, almost nothing have left.I'm allready sceptic about mods.Lets assume that guys from Dodge have built some vehcles by now.I do not think ,they don't know how to do it.I'm sure they allways make the right choice.
On the beginning of the winter,I found my fan being bent.So ,I removed it for repair. It was cold,so no problem with cooling. Many people on forums claims that it gives 5-10 HP gain.To be honest,i did not feel anything.Drove without it for three months. Now the fan is back.No difference.Try this.It is easy.Just one nut.
May be the guys who do the drag racing will feel the difference of 0,1 sec on 1/4 mile ???
Planned to change an exhaust. One day someone asked me about fantastic deep rumble of my(stock)exhaust.Since then, sometimes I open passanger window to listen it.He was bloody right.
There is a good link for You about budget mods.Think, worth to read at least www.intense-dakota.com/tips_and_tricks.htm

Message: The only posible gain removing he fan wuld be at startup or overheating in stalled traffic, hot weather. I totally doubt these short periods will be of usable help HP wise in real time operation. When the fan cluch lets got the fan basicly becomes a floater. Lots in here are running electric fans only. There stated fuel milage is no greater then mine so no advantage there either,
So many problems .... So little time

Good to hear this.I was allready affraid that because of my age(45) i'm not able to feel such an obvious 10 hp gain in horsepower, claimed by everyone..

Message: Yeah, everything you two are saying is making sense. Aside from that rough idle when I crank, it is running pretty darn good. I think I've isolated that idling to a smooshed Throttle body O-ring causing it to lose vacuum. I don't think it is getting a good enough seal. Waiting for a day off to test my theory, but it does make sense.
Anyways, I think I am going to try and get under the the truck and give the stabilizer bar a good hands-on test to see if it squeaks I guess. Not sure if it could be causing sloppy steering or not.
