Subject: Steering bushings IP: Logged
Message: I've had a clunking in the front end when the steering is taken to the limit lock in each direction for a few weeks and finally narrowed it down to the bushings where the steering gear (rack and pinion?) attaches to the frame and front drive axle housing. Has anyone had to changed these bushings before? How difficult is it? It almost looks as if you have to drop the axle down to get to them.
If it's not one thing it another!!!

Message: Nick, I must have been sleeping when that recall went out. Mine has 150K on it. Both are shot to hell. I take it by your answer that it is quite involved???

Message: Nick, I just checked the recall web site that lists all the recalls for a particular make/model etc. and found nothing in regards to the rack and pinion steering mounting bushings. Are you able to provide a campain #??? so I can research this better?

Message: I'm not sure how involved it really is.. I didn't get involved (pun intended).
I'll see if I can get something off my paperwork. I know the mech at the dealer said something about doing over 30 trucks in last two weeks before I got mine done. (about 2 years ago).
I'll see what I can find for you.

Message: That would be a big help Nick. Thank you. Just looking at it I don't think it is going to be too much fun. I just replaced both half shafts and intermediate shafts. That was fairly easy. The home made slide hammer was some what questionable but it did the job. I'm sure any onlookers would have surely laughed as it looked a lot like Joesh!t the rag man under the largest shade tree available ;^)

Message: I just went though my filing cabinet and I don't see any paperwork. All I found was when the replaced my cat converter under warranty. I did find some paperwork on camp no. 04V596000. I sure I had this work done too. You may want to check up on it.
I know it's around (just moved so things are little shuffled right now)just got to find it.
Check back in the next day or so and I'll post when I find it.

Message: Bill H., you can go to www.dodge.com and on their webpage there is a section to check on recalls for your particular vehicle. it requires the last 7 or 8 digits of your VIN. it may help.

Message: Any chance NICK is getting this problem mixed up with ball joints ?? I've searched recalls a lot on all crysler products and seen nothing about steering or rack a pinion bushings.
So many problems .... So little time

Message: Daddio, I checked the Dodge site and ran it by the last eight of the VIN. No outstanding recalls for my truck.
I took a better look at it this morning and it really appears as if the front axle will have to be dropped in order to change the bushings. That sucks! Oh well, next months project has now been planned for me.
