Subject: Trouble Code P0442 IP: Logged
Message: Hey everybody,
I got a check engine light the other day. I checked the code and got P0442, which I believe is "A medium Evaporative Emission Control System leak has been detected."
I have an '01, 4.7, 4x4, QC. I got the same code a couple of months ago when I filled my tank with gas with the engine running (too cold to shut it off in the winter). I unplugged the battery and it was good to go. Didnt work this time, and I think I smell gas around my truck somewhere.
Anybody got any ideas???
Thanks...

Message: I think a past post said it was the gas cap that went bad or something.

Message: Not so fast. I got that code over a month ago. I trimmed the cracked vapor hose on the canister attached to the frame (under the driver's door). No fixy. I replaced the gas cap. Still no fixy.
Yes, I reset the MIL each time. It came back on after about 20 miles of driving.

Message: Check the pump hoses that pressurizes the system. On my 02 it sits right behind the battery on the wheel well. Check all related hoses, I'v fixed a couple of splits like Modain mentioned.

Message: check:
1) gas cap
2) evap canister lines under the truck
3) vac lines from canister to the intake under the hood (there will be a schematic of vac lines on a decal under the hood)
you have a leak somewhere
it's not a fatal error code, just there's a leak in that closed system somewhere.

Message: I had the same code about a month ago on my '01 QC 4.7L.. I would try doing what bman42 suggested. I replaced my gas cap ($15 locking cap from dealer) and clipped about an inch off of both hoses going to my charcoal canister and reconected using hose clamps (there was no clamps on the hoses and the hoses pulled off pretty easily). Then reset your computer and run it for codes. Hopefully you will not have any. This fix is an easy and inexpensive place to start, and it worked for my Dak. It could be like modain stated though, and your codes may come back. Then you have a problem somewhwere else. Nothing major, your truck should still run fine, but I'm sure that the 'check engine' light is probably annoying you!
Hope this helps, and good luck to you! Keep us posted as to what fixes it, now I'm curious!
