Subject: EGR and mileage

I have a quick question about my EGR system. I have a code 32 on
my 95 3.9 auto and i was wondering if a faulty egr valve or system
would affect my mileage. it idles fine, i havent noticed any
performance loss. i wasnt going to bother with it if it would still be
getting the same mileage. and is there any way i could fix it without
replacing it? i hear cleaning it would probably fix it, are there any
other ways?

You can block it and forget about it after that.
You will probably still pass emissions testing.
Make a solid gasket of gasket material or sheet metal and install inplace of the standard gasket.
It goes where the EGR connects to the exhaust.

It will have little impact on gas mileage. But do the right thing and fix it. You don't know if it will pass emissions. And blocking it off is illegal; ignoring it would not be.

in my location, looks like im gonna block it off. i might fix it once i
get some money. is blocking it off going to take care of the check
engine light?

Back in EGR days it was a common practice to CUT THE BELT once back firing started. No power differance. No fuel differance. No noticable anything. Not right for sure but it worked for the poor mans car which was all he could afford to buy this being purchased at high milage. Myself, I never had a problem on my cars so I never looked in to possible fixes not legal. In my mind the EGR system was a fast easy temperary fix to please the government allowing time to develope what we have today. HP went down the tubes for some years there but it's back now with a vengance. There was a lot of mad new car buyers during those years. Take a ford 289 . In no exact years here, say a 1968 bronco at 210 HP(as I recall) and you buy a new bronco 289 in say 1971 and find out to late it's a dog. In short HP had dropped to 145 . So sad.

No, that's why I suggest fixing it. The Check Engine light indicates no change in fuel mixture when the computer activates the EGR valve.

"Back in EGR days it was a common practice to CUT THE BELT once back firing started." WHAAA??? What belt? There's no belt driven EGR system. Perhaps you're thinking of air pumps.
