Subject: High Idle

Hey guys I am having some trouble with a high idle in my 2001 4 cylinder dodge dakota and I am hoping one of you will be able to help me. Basically the truck idles high (Ranging from 1500-3000rpm) every so often. From what I can tell there doesn't seem to be any pattern as to when it idles high and when it doesn't. Once it starts idling high it usually stays like that until the truck is shut off and started again. When the truck is idling high it feels like the car is in cruise control.

I've taken the truck to a mechanic but he wasn't able to figure out what it was. He checked the throttle linkage and cleaned the throttle body. Also the computer chip was reset and the IAC motor was replaced. Any suggestions on what it could be? I've thought maybe a vacuum leak but it seems that would happen more regularly. Thanks a lot

My engine will idle high most often when the ignition components are faulty or going out. It usually will compensate for the problem and raise idle (computer will). Could check things having to do with ignition: cap, rotor, spark plugs and wires, etc... Most likely though its probably a sensor going bad. Its not easy when its intermittent but if you want to get rid of it thats where I'd start. Maybe check down in the distributor see if everything is alright. I see what you mean about vacuum leak though, maybe mainfold pressure or something. I don't know just throwing the basics at you.
