hello all, im new here. my grandfather is about to give me (that means free) a 1992 dakota 5.2 auto 4x4 ext cab, 46xxx miles, 600 miles on rebuild (motor sucked water). can anyone tell me if this is a good deal or not?

kidding. what common problems do these have? is this a port injection or tbi motor? hows the trans/case (sorry dont know which trans or case it has) and axles? is there any point in trying to make a tbi motor breathe better? never had one. when should the timing chain be replaced?

sorry for all the qs, any help would be great.

thanks

dan

its an awesome deal!! free is hard to beat!! get the truck!!

dano that sucks he had to rebuild the motor because i hydro locked my 5.2 and it still runs great. the time chain will last the length of the motor normally but 150k miles is a good time to. i think the trans were a little weaker in 92-93 so that would be a weak point. the truck probably has the 10 bolt 8 3/4s chrysler rear end. not sure on the transfer case. not sure on the injectors?

DANO....... Depending on the parts used and the quality of the work, you take care of this truck and it will tske good care of you with as good of service as any thing you could by. My opinion. Your not paying a penny for this truck. Your going into this ownership free and clear. It doesn't get any better. On the other hand, you abuse it, burning tires, racing , reving it out just cause it sounds good will cost you plenty as time goes by including a great truck that will die before it's time.

So many problems .... So little time

Well said...good truck so all it needs you to do is drive it good.A new motor is good but everything else on this truck is still 14 years old. Your grandpa probably took really good care of it so i would thank him and thank him again for letting you have it. Grandpas are great mine gave me my first truck. No burning tires and hotroding it...lol...its not a hotrod. Change your oil every 3k so it doesn't sludge up. Oh and reving it up can spin bearings especially right after the keys turned...don't ask me how i know...lol.

they don't make'em like they used to, routine maintenance and you should be good to go. just expect "stuff" to go periodically (joints, etc)
normal wear and tear, but should do you well.

good luck

cool thanks alot guys, i appreciate it. most of my qs are based offa not having the truck here for me to look at, its about 5 hours away in another city and im trying to make my way down there. but does anybody know if this is a TBI motor or a port FI motor? and according to the list

http://dodgeram.org/tech/gas/specs/general_engine.html

the 93 mag makes more power and tq than the 92 mag. what changed betweed the years and what can i do to bring mine up to those specs? im a auto tech for a living so dont worry bout scaring me. whats the difference between the LA and mag?

all your help is greatly appreciated fellas, thanks.

I believe they just have better flowing exhaust manifolds...swapping them out with exhaust manifolds from a 93 would help you out with gaining a lil more power.

I think 92's are multiport FI, but not positive on that one. I think that's the first year of MPI in the Daks though.

Free is awesome, only deal better then mine that i've ever heard of so far. I paid $25 for mine including cap and boxliner. guy didn't think it would ever run again, but at least i could try. I went to his place and poured some gas in the tank a bit down the tb changed the battery started it up and drove it home! and as the others have said, you treat it right it'll treat you right.

I think the '92 was TBI and '93+ were MPI. Look at the top of the intake manifold. If you have 4 injectors on each side, right above the valve covers, you have MPI. If not, TBI.

92 was the first year for the magnum 318. MPI. 93 was the first year for the magnum 360. The Shelby Daks and the 91 v8 Daks were all TBI and LA engines.
