Subject: Home Brew intake questions.. IP: Logged
Message: I think I am going to make an attempt at a "Home brew" intake this weekend after looking over the highly inspirational job GraphiteDak did on his rig. I do have a few questions though as I've never done this before.
What size ABS piping do I use? 3 inch diameter?
What do you use to seal the piping together to make sure air doesn't leak through?
Graphite mentioned something called cork that was used on the intake piping seams? I assume it is an insulator of some kind?
Any other tips from those who have done this would be appreciated. I want to just remove the resonator and leave the stock airbox in for now. The intake piping looks ten times easier to install and remove.

Message: I used 3" alloy tubes to connect the stock air box to the throttle body, using 3" rubber boots and hose clamps for the connectors. It works well, and looks terrific. the only drawback was "heat soak" to the metal tubes from the heater lines passing underneath. I took some 1" hose, slit one side, and covered the heater lines on top. My build was under the post "What is the best intake?". The results are well worth the effort.

Message: That about covers everything right there. Thanks, mikesz! By the way, what kind of tubing did he use for his winter intake?

Message: It looks like something I may try as I am still using the stock airbox; atleast until AMSOIL comes out with their aftermarket intake foam filters to go with my Airaid kit.
I'll have to check at my local home improvement warehouse to see what I can find. Thanks for the link again!

Message: Check with Steve. AMSOIL is coming out with one really soon. I understand it filters about 10 times better than the K&N.

Message: I had check with Amsoil a week or so ago. They said it will be sometime in mid 2006.
Anyways, I went all the way to my local Lowes (like Home Depot for you folks that don't know what that is) which was about a 30 minute drive and they were out of the 3" aluminum tubing.. Doh! I think I may just wait then for the Amsoil filter.
