Message: I don't know weather this is an expensive problem or just a speed sensor or something, kinda scared to take it to a transmission shop $$$$$! I have an automatic 1999 5.2L. Sometimes when accelerating from a stop or on to the freeway, it hesitates shifting out of first or second gear. I will be at like 3000 rpm for about 10-15 seconds waiting for it, then it will finally kick in. It's been doing it for a few months and hasnt seemed to get any worse. It seems to go in spirts, sometimes it will work pretty good for a whole week, and other times it will be bad for a week or two. Any ideas?

Message: I had a 97 Jeep Gr Cherokee 5.2L (auto) that wouldn't go into first gear. Not sure if it could be an issue with the same sensor. I think they called it a governor sensor? For some reason the sensor would keep it from starting in first at a dead stop. It might be telling yours to shift late perhaps? I think it cost me about $350 for parts and labor. Just throwing this idea at you... it may be something you want to check on.

Message: When the last time you got the oil in your tranny changed? If it been more than a year I would start there.

Message: My '01 RT did both of these things at different times. The not downshifting into 1st gear at stops was a solonoid that was sticking, fixed under warranty, at approx 30k. At 100k miles, one day the tranny kind of "bound" up when trying to go from reverse to park. Didn't think much about it, pulled it back into drive and then went to park, no big deal... Until I drove away later... Started shifting 1st to 2nd at around 3500 to 4000 rpm unless I purposly let off the gas at around 2300 rpm, then it would shift into 2nd just fine. Also, when driving if I got on it at all causing it to downshift into 2nd, it would slip like a bitch. I drove it like this for about a week expecting to buy a tranny. Took it to Certified Transmission, they checked it out, found some pieces of what appeared to be band material in the pan and also found some kind of rod that had either broken or came loose. Anyway, they fixed the rod and adjusted the 2nd gear band (or what is left of it) to the limit of the adjustment. Charged me $225. They advised me that if I have any other 2nd gear issues down the road to be ready to replace the tranny. I got lucky this time. Hope it holds up! This was fixed a couple of months ago and so far so good.

Message: I own a 99 Dakota Sport Ext cab 5.2L 4X4 Just had similar problem. Wouldn't shift until over 3K. Had to coax to shift by letting up on gas. Never really quite went into overdrive. Just slightly step on gas at speed and would downshift. Behaved worse when towing. Acted like it was pulling 3 times the weight I actually was. $23.00 at the auto parts store for the speed sensor and problem is gone. Sensor on right hand side back from trans pan. One inch wrench and quick hands when swapping sensor and I only lost about 2 tbls of fluid. A few minutes work.
