Subject: issues with bad ball joints IP: Logged
Message: I am wondering how long or how bad the ball joints need to be prior to fixing them. I know they are in need of replacing but I am not sure how soon they need to be done. Is there any general rule that if something is begins happening to change quickly to eliminate other damage? Or is there any amount of play that is allowed but after a set range it is best to replace or run the risk of bearing failure?
I have a 96 and am planning on adding some greese to increase some of the life and eliminate some noise but don't know what that will gain me (if anything).
I am at a point where I have to decide to fix all the items or just sell it and get something different, maybe a car instead.

Message: Problem is; they don't tell you when you'll end up with a wheel cockeyed inside the wheel-well and you sliding merrily down the interstate.
You can get good bolt on ball joints, upper and lower, at any decent parts store. Cut off the riveted old nasty ones and you'll save big bucks.
You might then consider a lifetime alignment plan with your favorite tire vendor.
