Message: I have always wondered about the cotton filters. I went out and
checked mine today. Didn't find any sand in the throttle body.
Everything looks great, and I run on dusty dirt roads all the time(2
years). Filter is also an Airaid. Are you sure you guys are doing it
right?
Just because you have ran them on evrything you have owned
doesn't mean anything.

Message: I gotta chime in here...
I've been running a K&N filter in my Edelbrock intake for a couple years now and have had zero problems with dirt/grime/sand/recharging oil getting into my intake. Never had any residue like that and I've gone about a year with the original filter and then oiled it a few months ago. Still no issues at all.
However, I will agree that by looking at charts and such they DO allow more dirt to pass but it's not enough to so any major harm to your engine's life, especially if it's well-maintained. I drive through all different conditions though (Ohio)...sometimes it's dusty, sometimes it's rainy, snowing, yada yada.

Message: Dan, no offense, but it is pretty hard to muck the filters up. I'm not an idiot and can read instructions on how to care and maintain a filter. Did you take the TB off and check the backside of it? I didn't really have any accumulation on the front side of my TB, but the back section (after the throttle flap) had a layer of oil and grit mixed in (I don't live in a sandy area). Same with the IAC air channel and the plunger. Keep in mind, this filter still has the factory oil on it, so I haven't "over oiled" it. I've been a firm believer in K&N and other similar branded filters for years and years, but this has turned me away from them a bit. I think they are fine for mostly street use, but if 40% to 50% of your driving consists of off-road, it may be best to stay away. Just my .02.
GB2000, it is possible it has a bit to do with a filter style. You have an 360 degree "airhat" style K&N, correct? Just throwing that idea out there although I'm not too sure it would have much to do with how much stuff it sucks in.
I respect everyone's opinions on this site. Everything said so far has given me one aspect or another and keeps conversations from being one-sided. Guess that is why I enjoy hanging out here. Things stay interesting. :)

Message: In addition...
I think pretty much the sum of this whole thread is that if it works for you, that is just dandy. If you start having weird acceleration/idling issues, check your TB. However, use your cotton gauze filter if you want. It is your truck and do what makes you happy with your property. I can't dictate what you do with your truck. I just wanted to share my experience with this whole thing and to let everyone know to be wary.
Some people may never ever have an issue, some people may just be too stubborn, and then there are those of us that have had an issue and have made an attempt to resolve it and let people know what they found. In the end, it is up to the individual as to what course of action to take with their truck. Good luck, everyone!

Message: Just got word back from AMSOIL that sometime in mid-2006 they are supposed to be introducing nine Ea Nanofiber filters for aftermarket air induction systems. Just thought I'd pass along the info.
