I just had to same problem fixed today on my dakota. I was getting an error code something like P0442. I cannot remember the exact numbers, but turns I had a bad gas cap. haha. Id take one off another car and see if that fixes it, its worth a shot. I was also getting terrible gas mileage. Hope i was some help.

dddddd,
Backfiring, caused by bad valves, broke my cat. A big chunk got wedged in the outlet pipe half blocking it. I still got 18MPG, thank the computer, but no power at all.
With that in mind, your MPG problem must be elsewhere. Your first post may be the clue; the computer default is "I'll get you home, but you better fix me." By that I mean all the stuff has to work together. Fix the code causes. Check and see if the computer is in survival mode. Hope some of the mechanics on this site chime in.
A muffler shop might have tests for pluggedness.

Check for a plugged intake. Not just the filter but end to end. then next would be vacuum leaks including plenun gasket.

So many problems .... So little time

Don't know if our Daks have a PVC valve. I never looked, but if it does, maybe yours is plugged. Your symptoms look similar. $5 fix if it is.

I had a similar code (P0544 I beleive). It was a leak in the evap system somewhere. I put on a new gas cap and crawled under the truck and refitted the hoses on the charcoal canister that is located just rear of the drivers seat. It's a little black plastic box that has two hoses coming from it. I cut about an inch off of each hose and put then back on (using hose clamps to insure a snug fit). Then I reset my computer (disconnect negative battery terminal and turn ignition on and off 3 times). I had no codes after that and it ran fine for weeks (until I traded it in ~cries~!!!)
I got this knowledge from some of the other members here, so if this doesn't work I'm sure someone else will have another fix as the guys on this forum are very knowledgable when it comes to their Dak's! Lot's of knowledge available on this forum!
Good luck!

I fixed my Dak the day after I first got the check engine light and the code, so I didn't really have much of a chance to see if my mpg was affected. I usually only got about 14-16 mpg anyways! My right foot is kind of heavy!
Good luck!

Well for sure don't forget to change the spark plugs at 30k miles, air filter, oil change, air pressure, etc..

Sometimes they get bad mileage because they need a tune up.
