Subject: 4 Wheel problems

Message:
Hey all...The last two times I've taken my truck for a little off road driving, I've had trouble getting my truck out of 4-wheel drive. It goes into 4-wheel fine, but when I've put into 4Low, it makes a clunking noise, and pops out occasionally. (pops out of gear). When I go to get back on the main road, I have a hell of a time shifting into 2-wheel. It's very tough, and takes a couple of minutes to finally get it.

I had my transmission rebuilt along with a new rear end put in not more than 2,500 miles ago. Can anyone offer any suggestions or advice?
Thanks.

What year is your truck? Some are electronically controlled....

If you have the manual shifter, read in your book for your truck, it describes when and how you can shift in and out of 4x4. If you do it wrong it is sometimes tough to get into 2 wheel drive without grinding.

You may of had your transmission rebuilt, but when was the last time the transfer case fluid was changed? Also remember that it is wise to use your 4wd at least once a month to help keep things lubricated. It does sound like your transfer case fluid may be either old, low, or bone dry.

Cool, thank you guys. I am going to check my fluid and see if that's the culprit. My truck is a 93, and it's an automatic.

You probably will get a more timely, direct response if you go ahead and start a new thread, Clayton. Be sure to also post your truck year, engine, mileage, etc.
