Message: I wouldnt mess with a K/N filter. all its going to do is put the oil and dirty grit down your intake. what happened to mine and went to a napa gold air filter. its a proven fact that K/N filters filters alot less. I can say it took me a good hour cleaning the TB and intake. it was like oily sand in there.
more air flow = less filtertation

Message: Lets say you do drive 20,000 miles annually, divide that by a conservative 13 miles per gallon. It equals 1,538.461 gallons of fuel. Now times that by (a high) $3 bucks a gallon and you come up with an annual fuel bill of $4,615. Remember that number. We will use it later. Bear in mind, if your mileage is better or gas is cheaper this number will actually be smaller.
Now
Let's say you are going to get that $12,000 car. Let's also say you are goig to pay it off in 4 years. We'll add a conservative $1,000 for interest to total $13,000. Divide $13,000 by 4 to get $3,250 in annual payments. We will again divide the 20,000 miles, this time by 25 mpg to get 800 gallons of fuel used annually. Times that 800 gallons by the $3 dollars a gallon to get $2,400 in annual fuel costs on the new car. Sounds good? Don't forget to add the $3,250 in annual car payments to the $2,400 in fuel costs. You now have an annual expendature of $5,650.
$5,650
-4,615
You are now spending $1,035 More ANNUALLY to drive the new car. Now this is provided you are not still making payments on your rig. If so, you would need to consider that, but only for the years you will be making payments. You also need to consider how much you use your pickup as a pickup. You can rent one when you actually need it (but it isn't as cheap as Lowes makes it out to be). As I said before, if your gas mileage is better than 13mpg or gas costs less than $3 a gallon, then you will be spending even more than the $1035 annually to drive the new car.
Example #2:
20,000 miles divided by the same 14.5 miles per gallon = 1379 gallons, times that by $2.75 a gallon and you come up with $3793.10 as an annual fuel cost.
And to be fair USE THE SAME $3,250 in annual payments. We will again divide the 20,000 miles, by 25 mpg to get 800 gallons of fuel used annually. This times that 800 gallons by the $2.75 dollars a gallon to get $2,200 in annual fuel costs on the new car. Add the $3,250 and $2,200 to get $5,450.
$5,450
-3,793
You are now spending $1,657 More ANNUALLY to drive the new car instead of $1,035. I don't know about you, but a lot can go wrong with my rig before I spend $4,000-$6,200 on it over the next 4 years.
Other things to factor in:
How much do you still owe on your pickup?
What will you get out of it by selling/ trading it?
Will you make money to put down on the new car or as the dealers call it, "be on top"?
That is where they give you less than what you owe and roll the difference onto "the top" of the new car loan...hence actually paying them even more (with interest) than what the car is actually worth.
Does this put things more into perspective?

Message: I agree with Dark Jedi.. Any cotton gauss based filter is going to let grit through; however, I have a cotton gauss filter on mine anyways. Mine has a Airaid (rather than a K&N) conical filter on their Quickfit intake kit. I believe the Airaid is a bit better IMHO because it looks as if there are more layers (thicker media). At least that was the sales pitch the customer support gave me. I can just about look through a K&N which is why I didn't go that route. I will just have to clean my TB & intake a bit more often, but I can live with that. That is my form of entertainment. :D
Another option for you, Marty, is to try one of AMSOIL's Ea Nanofiber filters. From what I've heard others say, they work real well and are reusable. They are also not a cotton gauss base.
Oh, when you are cleaning your TB, be sure to clean the air pathways where you take the IAC out of. You may have to get a pipe brush or something to really get in there. Good luck. :)

Message: You guys are awesome man, and YES, I'm still pulling big time towards keeping it, at least for now....But how about the K&N Fuel Inj perf kit ???? Will tha help on gas as well as performance ? The performance is fine but hey, if it'll add a tad there as well as an extra 1-3 miles per gallon it could pay for itself REALLY fast when gas goes to $3.00 dang dollars a gallon...
http://www.autoanything.com/air-intakes/60A1914A-1A1.aspx#customerReview
Or is there a better ""kit"" out there ???And "other bill" I got 45 payments on mine left but it's right at $300 and KNOW whatever I get will be more than that and for 60 months; just the way it works, so ur points are great....And got that Extang RT cover ((I really like it)) and my dad says he's getting about 10% better mpg in his 05 Silverado so we're gonna see next week....So what's input on the FIPK ??? And again, I truly thank y'all a ton and if i decide to keep this thing I AM gonna "join" in here; hell, might do it anyhow !!!!

Message: the amsoil nano fiber filter I have heard is a good flowing and filtering filter (imagine that a contradition to what I posted earlier lol) I owuld stay away from oil filters. as that oil has to go somewhere.
I used the K&N drop in filter and say no difference to the stock paper filter. only differenance I felt was in my wallet lol. you would need to get a better exhaust system. because your introducing more air in. so you have to get it out just as fast.
you have to ask is $300 to $400 for that FIPK kit worth 1 to 2 MPG gain they say you will get. when people have noted no increase in MPG. also 8 out of 10 people who used K&N has gone back to paper filter.
also you have to clean out that sucker. and unless you have another filter to put in while your servicing that filter. you cant drive your truck.
one last thing people who had their oil tested have always reported higher silicon levels in their oil. and the peopel always said they ran those K&N filters. so right there it shows that the dirt is getting in to your engine and in to your oil.
before you go off the deep end. jsut clean your TB and go from there
you can look for a beater car. something that looks like crap but gets good gas mileage and is cheap to pick up. I know if gas prices keep going up I will look for a beater and keep the truck. will make a nice lawn ornament.

Message: other bill -
I'm still paying on mine (bought it used). Owe 319 per month for the next two year. Probably going to a Sentra with payments of $310 per month for 4 years; brand new 2006 Sentra 1.8S Special Edition (16 inch alloy wheels, a/c, cruise, pw, pl, am/fm 6 disc CD changer, Rockford Fosgate sound system, power mirrors rear spoiler, etc, etc, etc.
I'll be paying less for fuel, less per month vehicle payment, but adding on two more years of payments, but getting a new vehicle versus a 2001 with 92K on the odometer and a brand spanking new 3/36 bumper to bumper and 5/60 power train warranty. I did the math for me and I'm better off.

Message: So did you take the whole throttle body off and give it a good scrubbing? Remove the IAC motor and clean it off as well? If so, good job. :) Hopefully it runs better for you.
Pretty much all after-market intake kits use those cotton gauss filters. They will let more grit in, but yes, you will get some better gas mileage along with more horse power. The trick is to keep your foot off the gas and be mindful of your fuel economy. For those of us lucky enough, some Dakotas have the overhead console that lets you know your current economy. Helps me regulate my foot and I find I can get pretty good gas mileage. Right now I get roughly 19 to 21 on flat pavement doing the speed limit (55 to 60). It gets about the same until up around 70mph.
I *really* wish Amsoil would produce a filter that we can use on their aftermarket intakes. I'd buy one in an instant. I may go back to my old airbox and buy one just to see how it compares. My Airaid just snaps on to the lid clamps (lid is removed). May eventually get the intake piping to replace the stock resonator. That thing is irritating to take off. I am going to take it all off this weekend and check and see how much grit I have in my TB since the last cleaning a few weeks ago. If it is a lot, I'm just going to go back to the old setup. No sense in borking something up and causing problems elsewhere.

Message: Well heck.....Went and got the Volant 16947 like this
http://www.proficientperformance.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=VOL-16947&Category_Code=volant_cool-air_boxed_small_truck_dodge&Store_Code=PP
and the dang thing couldn't be put on correctly..Would have to move the oil dipstick or bend the heck out of it (I ain't gonna do that) and the grommet hole for the air temp sensor was smaller than the sensor itself..Spent 2 hours trying to get it on and 30 minutes taking it off..Guess I'll just run the stock box with the K&N filter I have and keep the TB and IAC clean, and yeppirs, I cleaned the heck out of both, so guess we'll see....Just truly wanted to try and see if this CAI would work and get me a td better mpg and hp...Oh well, life goes on and I'll be returning it tomorrow....

Message: Amsoil does.
New air and oil filters. Called "Ea"
Contact your friendly Amsoil dealer. Or www and request the free catalog. Might as well check out the filters on the Product Information tab while you are visiting.
I once had a custom foam air filter made, but don't know if they'll still do that.
