Subject: Whats wrong with my brakes!?!? IP: Logged
Message: 2 weeks ago the front left brake was sticking some so i took it apart and cleaned everything up and put it back together to go get new calipers. put on at least 600kms since then with no problem...push my 2000 dakota with 2 fingers on level road.
anyways, today the same brake started to stick again but this time it was bad. got so bad that the wheel got hot and smoke was coming out. pulled into a parking lot and it was locked so bad the rear wheels broke loose.
it sat for a few hours while i was gettin my buddy to bring his trailer to bring my truck home. brakes went back to normal not sticking at all.
2 weeks ago i noticed that the bottom 1/4" or so of the pad was touching while the rest wasnt.
any suggestions? money is tight right now and i cant afford new calipers. i love tinkering with things...
also, it only has 39000kms on it.

Message: tell your momma to quit peeing on your tires.. her herpes are eating away at your braking system.. I've worked with Dodge for 50+ years and this is the most common case with these dakotas.

Message: You need to replace the pads and rebuild the calipers. The piston is probably cocked in the bore. That places uneven pressure on the pad, and prevents the piston from retracting.

Message: It sounds like your calipers are not on straight. The holes that the bolts, that hold the caliper on, usually get fudged up pretty easily. If those bolts aren't on straight it makes it very hard for the caliper to release.

Message: You also need to replace your fluid...the fluid down by that wheel is definitely cooked.
