Subject: Roll on bed liner IP: Logged
Message: Has any one ever used the roll-on bed liner kits like the one Advance Auto Parts sells? Its like a do-it-yourself rhino liner. What kind of results did you get and how hard was it to do?

Message: john,
I did that roll on liner from I think rhino. its a couple stage process for cheap. the process is as good as the effort you put into it. I prepped the bed thoroughly as it recommends. It went as follows: 1.sanding - took me a couple of hours to do a 'good' job.
2. acetone and TSP - acetone to clean any residue left from the sanding and other stuff; TSP for any left over. 3. Prep - took off tail gate for better access, and taped the top edge of bed to give it a stream-lined look. 4. I think that was it... time to 'roll on.' Its two applications and that was probably the easiest part of the she-bang. The stuff seems toxic though. I wore chemical gloves and had a headache from the fumes. Good luck it not that bad. I would give it a two day project though. I am kind of a perfectionist - it took me probably about 8-10 hours in total. The look after is superb, but only lasts about a week. the sun KILLS it really quickly, the shine that is. I would get the top coat that protects the shine. It adds quite a touch if it only lasted.

PS.. Overall, its a weak application compared to what a plactic bed liner can do. I put light carpentry stuff in there with no problem - tools, lumber, materials, rock, etc... The only problem I have with it is when you put objects taht are too heavy for its purpose/design. I transported a motorcycle to the dumps in it and there are some scratches where it was set down.
Note: 8-10 hours if you plan on doing a good job. i had some minor rust spot that I fixed. And i also practically wire brushed the entire bed with a power drill. If you did a half ass job it would probably still friggin work just the same. the stuff is toxic.

Message: I used it in the trunk of a car. It's pretty light weight. For a pick up, I think you'de want to do 3-4 coats, not the 2 I did in my trunk.
Even then, it won't be as good as real spray on rhino-liner. But it is cheaper. You get what you pay for (if you're lucky).
