Subject: MANUAL VALVE BODY IP: Logged
Message: I have a 97 dakota 5.2 4x4 automatic. I have been wanting to get it to shift firmer or better yet when I want it to shift. Alot of times it will not up shift and cause me to over rev the engine. So I was thinking about running a shift kit. Well when I went to the trans shops to see what they would say. All of them told me not to run a shift kit on a 4x4. They all said that I would be better off running a manual valve body. They said that a shift kit will only cause me problems. So my question is what do you all think about this? What should I do, and has anybody ran a shift kit or a manual valve body on their 4x4. Please help. I would like to get this problem fixed.
Thanks

Message: Did you ask them how it was going to mess you up? Only thing that comes to mind is shifting in low range. I don't have a shift kit but I did read somewhere in low range a shift kit will about tare your head off. I'm only guessing this would be the problem they refered to.
So many problems .... So little time

Message: The complete shift kits like the TransGo kits can be set up in one of three ways. Stage 1 is HD for towing, etc. Stage 2 is street/strip. Stage 3 is for all-out drag racing. Typically, manual valve bodies are for even more serious racing, and you're stuck with having to shift all the time. The kit allows full manual control when you want it, but slip it into drive and you get full auto. Just set it up for stage 1. You'll get better performance in the tranny with quicker, mildly firmer shifts, but not so wild as the higher stages.
