Message: yes you'll have to get it reprogrammed cause the PCMs store vehicles VIN number in them so that will have to be changed and thats mainly the reason why... but also it will have the latest reprogamming of certain perameters(codeing) so that engine is running at it top performance...

Message: well if it was a used PCM and it came from an identicle truck year make and engine it would run your truck but it wouldnt have your VIN recored in it... if ya went to emissions you would probably fail... pending what type of state emissions you have... here anything 96 or new gets tested through vehicle data connector under the dash and it looks at that needed info... they say to reflash it cause there is number of PCMs that can be used from different vehicles... rather a v8 dakota or i4 dakota...

Message: I tried a salvage yard one once-ran fine-didn't cure my problem though so I took it back out. Was in a s10 truck-96 model-not dodge.

Message: My 4.7 '00 ran fine on a boneyard PCM while I was getting the stock one custom flashed; no mil or problems. From what I've heard, some of the other motors can be more senseitive to a PCM with the wrong vin #.
Are you trying to claim a '96 S10 PCM ran your '00 Dak ? I don't believe it would.

Message: I also ran a scrapyard PCM for awhile. The check engine and brake light idiot lights would come on. The truck ran fine. Dealer mechanic tried to clear but said the VIN's did not match between the ABS controller and the PCM. He said I needed a new ABS controller and that it could be flashed with the correct VIN. This is still wrong as the ABS controller would need the VIN from the salvage yard truck. He said he could not assign a new VIN to the PCM. This also is not true because Mike Leach, KRC and others offer a VIN update!
In the end I went back to my original PCM and bought a Superchips Micro-tuner and used it to get rid of the "Death Flash" previously installed by the dealer.
The scrapyard PCM was from the same year and optioned Dakota.
