Subject: 2001 Dakota 4X4 SLT Extended Cab IP: Logged
Message: I am interested in purchasing a 2001 4X4 extended cab p/u. I recently drove a Dakota SLT with the 4.7 automatic. The performance and sound were impressive. I am somewhat confused by the different fuel mileage I see reported, both here and in other forums. I live in a small town in western Virginia and am curious what mileage other owners get with thier 4X4 Dakotas for both short trips and interstate trips.
Thanks
Ken

Message: I have the 2000 version of what you're looking at, with about 15,000 miles on the clock. Around town I get about 13, on the highway about 17. Not impressive mileage, but only a few mpg less than what I got with my old '94 Dakota 2WD 3.9 5-speed (16 city, 19-20 hwy).

Message: I drive the 2001 Quad Cab in rural northern Utah. I live in a very small town, but work about 20 miles from home. This makes most of my driving highway driving (75 mph speed limit). I've got 5000 miles on my truck now and on the worst tank of gas I got 16.8 mpg, and on my best tank I've gotten 18.2 mpg. (I have the overhead trip computer.) And more times than not, I'm usually in the 17.4-17.8 mpg range. I don't really baby the pedal much in town, I do use cruise alot right at 75 to and from work daily. I use mid-grade gas and can say that I'm very happy with the mileage I've been getting. I owned a V6 3.0L Toyota till I got my Dodge and with that I was getting right around 16 mpg with that. No complaints here.

Message: You should get the 5.8 litre. And put growler exhausts on her. Make that duel exhasts, with growler muffelers.
This way you don't need to worry about MPG, because you already know its godawful.

Message: Yes, put the 5.8 Ford in it.But the 5.9 would be easer.

Message: You might get a little better mileage with a 5 speed, that way you can choose when to shift and how high to go in the rpm range.
Unlike most people, I live less than 2 miles from work and with the exception of a short 2/10s of a mile stretch, the speed limit does not exceed 25. My gas mileage hovers around 14-15. Normally, my engine doesn't even warm up much.

Message: Yeah go with the manual, because that way you can get the bigger engine, and not lose as much on the mpg.
